The two main ingredients in Hongar Farms Gourmet Oils are Canola Oil and Olive Oil. Here are some facts about the ingredients.

Olive Oil

In the fifth century B.C.E., olive trees were widely cultivated across the Mediterranean. From the natural juices of the olive, Olive Oil became a hot commodity throughout the Greek colonies. Today, Olive Oil has sustained its role in the Italian diet and spread throughout the world. Olive Oil is very beneficial to one’s health, for it contains a large amount of antioxidative substance and monounsaturated fatty acids, both of which maintain a healthy cholesterol level by raising good cholesterol and regulating bad cholesterol. Olive Oil has a “protective function,” producing positive effects that help shield against cancer and heart disease. Olive Oil is processed in different varieties, ranging from extra virgin, which consists of the olive’s first oils, to extra light, which is highly processed with small traces of the olive juice.

Canola Oil

Canola Oil is a cooking oil that comes from a mixture of turnip rapeseed, leaf mustard, and black mustard. Developed in Canada in the late 1960’s, Canola is referred to as “low erucic rapeseed oil,” for in its FDA approved cooking form, rapeseed oil contains less than 1 % erucic acid when used as Canola Oil. Canola Oil consists of three fats: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated. Both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are beneficial to one’s health, for both help to control a healthy level of cholesterol. Canola has the best fatty acid ratio, for it is high in monounsaturated and polysaturated fats, but low in saturated fats. Canola Oil contains the essential fatty acids needed to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Canola Oil has a flavor that can be added to any food venture, be it mixed in a salad dressing with other oils or used to sauté a meal.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is the pressed juices from the fleshy pulp of the delicious avocado. It has a particularly high smoking point and light flavor making it a perfect cooking oil for both high temperature frying, grilling, and sautéing, as well as a nice light salad oil ideal for making vinaigrettes or as an alternative to olive oil. Avocado oil contains high levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids which have links to reduced breast cancer, lower cholesterol, weight loss and a lower risk for heart disease and stroke. Avocado oil also contains proteins, beta-carotene and vitamins A, D and E, and has a better ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids than olive oil.

Toasted Sesame Seed Oil

Toasted Sesame Seed Oil is a wonderful finishing oil to add new flavors to your meals. It has a low smoke point relative to most other others and it not suitable for any cooking. Sesame oil is high in linoleic acid, one of the essential fatty acids our bodies cannot produce and are required for normal growth and for healthy blood, arteries, and nerves. Scientific research has shown that essential fatty acids play an important role in regulating blood pressure, metabolism, and cholesterol. Medical research has shown that the consumption of sesame oil lowers cholesterol and is beneficial for the heart and kidneys. Sesame oil is also rich in oleic acid, and unrefined oils that are high in oleic acid are thought to benefit cardio-vascular health. Unrefined sesame oil also contains an antioxidant called sesamol, which protects it from becoming rancid. Antioxidants have been shown to absorb free radicals, which are known to cause disease.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a wonderful high heat cooking oil. It contains significant amounts of vitamin E (about twice as much as olive oil), it is non-hydrogenated, has no cholesterol or trans fats, and very little saturated fat. In 2011 a study in "Journal of the American Dietetic Association" concluded that grape seed oil helped lower blood pressure levels and overall heart rate while not affect blood lipid levels. Other studies have shown that grape seed extracts contain the antioxidant proanthocyanidin, and the proanthocyanidin content of grape seeds helped lower the overall low-density lipoprotein levels as well as total overall cholesterol levels.
